Spar Hockey Tournament

On Saturday, 4 May, Sarel Cilliers First team hockey girls travelled to St Dominics in Newcastle to participate in the KZN Spar Hockey Challenge. Our first match was against Ferrum High School, who have been the reigning champions for seven years. With that in mind, we went down against them and lost 1-0. Determined not to give up, we took on our next opponent, Pionier high school, winning the game 1–0.

The games became tougher as only the best schools made it to the final rounds. We showed off our true “never surrender” attitude and won our game against Pongola High School, 1 – 0. This meant we qualified for the semi-finals where we took on St Dominics. We drew 0-0 in that round. At this stage, nerves were on edge as we had to complete an eight second penalty shootout to determine which of us would go through to the final round.

After qualifying for the final round, we took on the undefeated Ferrum High School, who are also the 2019 PUK16 winners. Emotions were running high for both teams, as we faced yet another eight second penalty shootout which resulted in another draw. The girls then had to participate in a sudden death round where we, unfortunately, lost. Congratulations to Ferrum High School on a well-deserved win and to Sarel Cilliers first hockey team for playing so well.
